About Me
Hello! My name is Joyce, and I'm a (mostly) self-taught ceramic artist originally from Richmond, Virginia and currently making pottery in New York City. Growing up in Virginia, I have always felt connected to the natural beauty of the area, and the flowering dogwood is at the center of Virginia's landscape. Beautiful in all seasons, the dogwood signifies resilience, adaptability and their crisp white flowers mark a time of new beginnings. I carry my Virginia background with me in New York City, and my work is a reflection of the things I cherish from all the spaces I've occupied in my life.
My work is characterized by minimalist forms, lovely neutral and earth tones, and organic carvings. I love working with clay bodies that have some texture, and often highlight the contrast in texture between the natural clay and the glaze covering the piece. I create vessels that are both functional and beautiful, from dishes and bowls, to decorative candles, planters and vases. I love to see where my fingers left their mark on a piece, a visual representation of the care and work that goes into creating each vessel.
I feel so lucky to have found my calling in pottery, and I'm grateful for every moment I get to spend making. Thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit about me and my work.
